The mitten pattern was given to me by an Inuit lady named Marie whom I knew when I lived in Thule, Greenland. She and I belonged to the same sewing group. She gave me the mitten pattern along with a sealskin from the people in her village when she showed me how to make a pair of sealskin mittens. I gave her my glove pattern, some leather, and showed her how to make a five fingered glove. When I asked her where she acquired her pattern she told me it had been given to her by her mother and her mother got it from her mother. It had been handed down from person to person in her village.
Pattern Construction
Print the mitten_pattern pdf file on 11X17" paper. Cut out the pieces. Label the other side, side B. I suggest you laminate each pattern piece. It will make it easier to trace and will preserve your pattern for multiple uses.
You can use any animal hide with fur on or a piece of glove leather. Lay out your pattern with all side A facing up. Trace using a pen, tailors chalk, or colored pencil. Cut each piece out using a sharp pair of scissors. The edge of the leather must not be jagged.
Place the front and back of the trank together. Starting on the outer edge, sew using a round stitch, until you come to the
